The reuse of syringes: a practice all too common in under-funded clinics. The practice kills 1.3 million people each year. Marc Koska clues us in to this devastating global problem and shares his solution: a low-cost syringe that can’t be used twice.
Here’s super-hip video on the National Popular Vote which would change the Electoral College system. Check out my detailed post below.
I’m very excited about something. Friends always say “What’s the deal with the electoral college?” And I’m like “Yeah, it’s crazy, someone should change it.” Well someone IS changing it! The National Popular Vote movement (wiki) wants to get all 50 states to pass a law in their legislature which would assign actual votes instead of using the electoral college. Cool thing is, states possessing 23% of the required electoral votes have passed it already. I think that’s rad!
Here’s what their web site says:
“Under the U.S. Constitution, the states have exclusive and plenary (complete) power to allocate their electoral votes, and may change their state laws concerning the awarding of their electoral votes at any time. Under the National Popular Vote bill, all of the state’s electoral votes would be awarded to the presidential candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The bill would take effect only when enacted, in identical form, by states possessing a majority of the electoral votes—that is, enough electoral votes to elect a President (270 of 538).”
Benefits: Well, we would (finally!) erode the absurd 2-party system. Also, it would solve the problem of a candidate who wins the popular vote still losing the election – this has happened 7 times in this country (remember 2000?).
Check out the progress on the movement in your state!
There’s criticism, of course. Here’s a good scholarly study critical of the movement. Really, though, the criticism amounts to pointing out how hard it will be to accomplish this (which isn’t really criticism of the movement itself), as well as pointing out numerous “what if” problems that result from changing the status quo. Well OF COURSE problems will arise. It’s DIFFERENT. And DIFFERENT ISN’T BAD! A third concern is that such a movement, when not done through the constitutional amendment process, violates state’s rights (10th amendment). Now I am a man concerned with centralized power, and I see no problem here. The states themselves will be voting this measure in, so it requires their consent. And it doesn’t rob states of any meaningful power, considering the ENORMOUS BENEFITS.
This is a chance for us to actually change our country for the better! I’m down!
But don’t just take my word that this is a good thing. There’s tons of blogs, youtube videos, articles, and studies on this issue. Check ’em out!

Save the world Blogger Nicholas Farmer weighs in on the issue of Marijuana legalization
It is time for America to end one of the most unjust practices of our society: the criminal prohibition of marijuana. I am someone who has never used any currently illegal substances, nor plans to do so, but I am committed to fighting for the rights of others. As Americans, we have the right to liberty, that is, to act as we wish, so long as we do not harm anyone else, or cause unreasonable risk of harm. Given that incarceration is the most powerful punishment that a free society can inflict on its citizens, it should only be used for the most serious of offenses. Marijuana use, even production and distribution, does not cause harm to others; all the arguments claiming otherwise have been debunked by serious study. Alcohol, which is legal, can be a dangerous drug that causes harm to others. This example demonstrates how senseless the hypocrisy is which has ruined the lives of far too many innocent people. Whether or not we as a society approve of marijuana is inconsequential; what matters is liberty, and justice.
So if you visited the blog yesterday, the stat of the day located in the sidebar was the following “Only 24 states and D.C. include sexual orientation in their hate crime legislation”. It’s been more than a decade in the making, but finally expanded hate crimes legislation including protections for sexual orientation, gender, gender identity and disability will head to the President’s desk for signing. And it passed overwhelmingly in the U.S. Senate, by a vote of 68-29. I got a feeling Obamas going to sign this one without hesitation.

Fellow Save the world blogger Conor Mcgee might never post another Glenn Beck article but in this post I’m going to publicly ask him to reconsider. Listen, Conor and all STW blog readers and bloggers, humans need humor in their lives. Glenn Beck offers the world great comedy. If you need to be cheered up say… you just failed a midterm, had a fight with a friend or just got a facebook friend request from your mom, TURN ON BECK. His nonsensical rants and lack of real factual information make for great comedic television.
Now as Conor brought up, the scary thing is people take him seriously and get most of their news from Beck and Hannity. But who are these people, how can they watch the segments like the one shown in the link below and say “You know what, Beck makes some good points”. These viewer have obviously made a conscious effort to ignore all logic, rationality and factual evidence. Hate has filled their hearts, whether it be hate for the administration, for gays, for rape victims, or for Volunteers. It takes a certain type of person to watch Beck and only Beck and though it is scary for the rest of America, I am not sure if we can really do something about it.
Sure we can ignore them, claiming our time is to0 valuable and engaging in any sort of debate with Beck or his followers would be worthless but your not going to stop the Beck machine. He gets ratings and as long as this administration is in office his rants will continue. So laugh, enjoy, sit down with some popcorn, and take a trip away from reality and enter the imaginary world of Glenn Beck and Fox news.
We’re in the business of saving the world and laughter is the best medicine. so please… watch Glenn Beck.

Boycott the Seal Club October 22, 2009
So I came across this video today and its another one that just makes you go WTF. I posted the video on the slaughter of dolphins a few days back, horrific to say the least, now check out what people are doing to seals. This ones a little less graphic, its more about working with peta to stop the clubbing of seals but it gets a little gory towards the end. I post these videos because I really want people to understand what humans are doing to the creatures of the earth for their own gain. We can live without dolphin or whale meat and we can definitely live without the fur from these seals.
